The classic beauty of Dutch and Flemmish paintings has always motivated me to achieve a similar style in my own work. The glowing light of an interior by Vermeer and the mystery of Rembrandt's portraits never fail to move me along my own path. I strive to emulate the masters in my work and find that with each new painting, I learn more about my own style as well as theirs. My oil and pastel paintings are composites of all the places I have visited and experienced throughout my life. European travel has strongly influenced the street scenes as well as the still life work. Traveling has provided me with a rich tapestry of images to translate onto canvas.
I am drawn to quiet scenes of tranquility infused with glowing light that is achieved with layers of glazes and thickly applied "impasto" paint. The result is work that calms and enriches the soul while at the same time uplifting the viewer. My paintings are composites of many different places rather than one distinct location. This melding of place and time comes together in one general impression that evokes a mood and atmosphere that can relate to anyone. |
